Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that acts through selective inhibition of the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, which mediates prostaglandin synthesis. COX-2 is the main isoenzyme responsible for prostaglandin production associated with pain, inflammation, and fever. In in vitro studies conducted using whole canine blood, firocoxib demonstrated approximately 380-fold greater selectivity for COX-2 compared to COX-1.
